- SAFETY TIPS: Never leave burning vigil lamps unattended. Refill the oil in your vigil lamp when one-quarter to one-third of the oil is used up. This will prevent the glass from overheating and causing unpleasant odors. Keep flammable items away from the lamps, especially above it. Candles placed on, or near tables, altars, or shrines, must be watched by an adult.
